How I Solved the Ceiling Vent Problem When Hanging an Island Light

We were remodeling our kitchen and we extended our island. I dreamed of having three pendant lights over our new island, but when I figured the distance between them, to have them spaced evenly, the air vent in the ceiling was always in the way. I never thought that would be a problem.

I considered moving the vent and even thought about having only two pendant lights, but I knew I wouldn’t be happy with that. One light fixture with three lights was the answer. I’m in love with this light and it solved my problem. It got installed in the center of the island and we didn’t have to move the vent. Perfect!

Here’s what worked — and why I’d choose this type of light again in a heartbeat.

Before the remodel: the ceiling vent sat directly where island lighting would normally be centered.

Instead of spacing three separate pendant lights, I chose a single fixture that held three lights in one piece. This allowed the fixture to be centered over the island while still giving the look of evenly spaced pendants. It completely solved the vent issue without changing the ceiling or the layout.

After the remodel: the single fixture allowed the island to stay centered while the vent faded into the background.

After the remodel: a single fixture with three lights centered over the island — no vent relocation needed.
